Expo 2025 Osaka is a global celebration of creativity, and my recent visit to Yumeshima’s artificial island was nothing short of inspiring. Running from April 13 to October 13, 2025, under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” this world’s fair hosts 161 countries showcasing innovation, culture, and sustainability. With 28 million visitors expected, it’s a vibrant hub for art and culture lovers. Here’s my honest take on the crowds, pavilions, and performances, plus a nudge to explore Osaka’s hidden art scene with Pocket Guide Japan for a deeper cultural dive.
The Buzz of Expo 2025: Crowds and Energy
Walking into Expo 2025 feels like stepping into a global village. On opening day, 120,000 visitors packed Yumeshima, and the energy was palpable. However, be prepared for crowds. Popular pavilions like Saudi Arabia and France had wait times of 1-2 hours, and food stalls, especially at Saudi Arabia’s restaurant, moved slowly due to high demand. As one X user put it, the lines are “almost no wait” for festival pros, but for most, early arrival via Yumeshima Station is a game-changer.
The Grand Ring, a 1.5km wooden canopy by Sou Fujimoto, offers shaded walkways and stunning sea views, making navigation a visual delight. With 47 country pavilions, the scale can overwhelm, but the buzz of global cultures colliding is worth it. Bring patience and comfy shoes!
Pavilions: A Tale of Tech and Art
Many pavilions lean heavily on tech—think immersive videos and info-heavy panels. From AI showcases to sustainability stats, the focus on innovation sometimes overshadows emotional depth. For art lovers, this can feel like a missed opportunity for soul-stirring moments.
Then there’s the France Pavilion, a love letter to art and nature. Titled “Theatre of Nature” by Coldefy and Carlo Ratti, it guides you through France’s ecosystems via a winding path and a rooftop garden mimicking alpine peaks. Louis Vuitton’s artisan videos added a touch of elegance, proving France’s knack for displays that move the heart. If you’re an art enthusiast, this pavilion is unmissable.
Performances: The Heartbeat of Expo
The true magic of Expo 2025 pulses through its live performances, bringing pavilions to life with raw human creativity. At the Spain Pavilion, I was captivated by traditional Spanish music and dance—vibrant flamenco rhythms and swirling skirts that echoed the country’s fiery spirit. Before the China Pavilion, an African nation’s performance stole my attention, with musicians playing a xylophone-like instrument, possibly a balafon, its bright, melodic tones resonating across Yumeshima. Saudi Arabia’s rhythmic sword dances exuded cultural pride, while the France Pavilion’s open-air music wove a romantic spell. The Philippines Pavilion, with its rattan facade, hosted dynamic dance shows visible from every angle, and the USA Pavilion’s courtyard stage buzzed with American musicians. These often impromptu performances capture the human spirit Expo celebrates. For music and culture lovers, they’re a vivid reminder of why travel feels so alive. Craving more? Architecture That Sparks Wonder
Even amidst the crowds, the pavilions’ architecture at Expo 2025 Osaka is a joy, each design telling a unique cultural story. The Singapore Pavilion, a 17-meter red sphere dubbed “Dream Sphere,” glows with recycled discs, embodying innovation and sustainability. The Canada Pavilion evokes icy landscapes with a cool facade, yet its warm interior welcomes visitors with optimism. The China Pavilion, inspired by bamboo slips and calligraphy scrolls, unfolds like a poetic narrative of nature and technology. The Azerbaijan Pavilion captivates with seven arches, drawing from the epic Seven Beauties to weave tradition and modernity. The Bahrain Pavilion, shaped like a traditional dhow boat by Lina Ghotmeh, blends Bahraini maritime heritage with Japanese woodcraft. Strolling through Yumeshima feels like exploring a global design gallery—every building sparks curiosity and excitement.
What Stays With You: Humanity and Nature
Expo 2025’s theme points to the greatness of human creativity and nature’s beauty. The France Pavilion’s poetic artistry, Saudi Arabia’s cultural depth, and the Grand Ring’s harmonious design left me in awe of what we can achieve. Yet, the crowds and tech-heavy exhibits made me crave quieter, more intimate experiences—something Osaka’s local art scene delivers in spades.
